Welcome to First Grade in Room 103!
Hello! Welcome to first grade! My name is Joan Nelson, and I am privileged to be your child’s teacher this year. Although, I have been part of District 13 for quite a while, this is my third year teaching at DuJardin. I am very excited to be part of the DJ community! I look forward to meeting and working with you.

Personal Information:
My wonderful husband and I met in college, and we have three awesome children. I also have a large extended family. Most of us are in education so Thanksgiving dinner is full of teacher talk!
On the weekends I love to read. Mystery novels are my favorite. I also spend a lot of time watching my son at his sports events. Soccer, basketball, and volleyball are big in our lives.
I am really lucky to be teaching first grade! This year is going to be so exciting. Each child will have a Chromebook to use. The new Next Generation Science Standards, which emphasize discovery, perseverance, and the engineering process will be used to guide our science curriculum. The children will become adept readers and we will work to develop a love of reading. Number sense and mathematical concepts will become a basis for new learning in higher grades. There is so much that is new and exciting. First grade is truly a place of wonder.
I love teaching, and my goal is to provide your child with a wonderful educational experience. I truly believe in collaboration between the home and school, and love talking about first grade. If you ever have any questions, concerns, comments or joys to share, please let me know. I look forward to speaking with you and getting to know your children!
